Eyelid Aesthetics (Blepharoplasty): Detailed Guide
Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Aesthetics): The Definitive and Lasting Surgical Solution Against the Signs of Aging
The most important point of mutual communication on the human face and the center of expression are undoubtedly the eyes. However, because the eye area is one of the regions in the human body where the skin is thinnest, most sensitive, and the underlying fat tissue is minimal; it is the area that gives the earliest reaction to gravity, advancing age, intense stress, insomnia, harmful UV rays of the sun, and genetic factors. Over time, the loosening and skin accumulations that occur on the upper eyelids can erase the natural fold line of the eyelid and drop down onto the eyelashes. This situation not only makes the person look much more tired, sad, and older than they are; but at advanced levels, it also turns into a functional problem that makes daily activities such as reading a book or driving difficult by physically restricting the visual field. In the lower eyelids, the situation follows a different course; the fat pads supporting the eyeball herniate forward with the weakening of the membrane (septum) holding them, creating prominent "under-eye bags." Blepharoplasty (eyelid aesthetics) operation comes into play exactly at this point, as the most effective surgical intervention that permanently corrects structural deformations in both the upper and lower lids and restores the lost youthful and bright expression to the eye area.
The operation process is meticulously planned to be applied only to the upper lid, only to the lower lid, or to both in the same session, depending on the anatomical needs of the patient. Upper eyelid aesthetics is generally a very comfortable procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia (while the patient is awake, only that area is numbed) and takes an average of 45 minutes to 1 hour. The surgeon makes a millimetric incision over the natural fold line of the eyelid; removes the excess skin tissue that impairs functionality and, if any, the herniated small fat pockets, and closes the area with aesthetic stitches. In lower eyelid aesthetics, the approach is divided into two according to the patient's condition. If the patient only has fat bagging and no excess skin, the fat bags are removed by entering through the inside of the eyelid (transconjunctival) without making any external incision, or they are repositioned towards the cheek area to eliminate hollows in the face. If excess skin is also present, the incision is made exactly at the base of the eyelashes, the excess skin and muscle tissue are removed, and the lower eyelid is tightened.
The recovery period after blepharoplasty surgery is quite comfortable and painless, contrary to what many patients fear. Due to the surgical intervention, it is a physiologically expected situation to have some edema (swelling) and mild bruises around the eyes during the first 48 hours. The cold (ice) compress treatment, which the physician will recommend to be applied regularly in the first days after the operation, ensures that these swellings and bruises regress very quickly. The fine aesthetic stitches placed during the surgery are usually removed within 5 to 7 days, and patients can easily return to their desk jobs and normal social lives at the end of the first week. The issue of scarring is always a subject of great curiosity for our patients. However, the eyelid skin is the region of the body that heals fastest and leaves the least scars. Since the incisions are hidden in the natural fold line in the upper lid and at the base of the eyelashes in the lower lid, it is almost impossible to notice any surgical scar when looking from the outside or talking face to face after the healing process is completed. The vibrant, vigorous, and fresh looks achieved maintain their permanence for an average of 10-15 years. Results of any surgical or interventional procedure may vary from person to person. It is recommended to get a detailed consultation from your physician before the procedure.
