Information About Septoplasty (Nasal Septum Surgery)

The structure composed of cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity into two channels is called the septum. The deviation of this structure from the midline due to genetic factors or trauma is known as "septum deviation." This curvature can block airflow, leading to chronic nasal congestion, mouth breathing, and snoring. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting this deviation anatomically to restore healthy nasal breathing.

Purpose of the Operation

Septoplasty is primarily a functional surgery; it does not aim to alter the external appearance of the nose. However, if the patient has aesthetic concerns, this operation can be combined with aesthetic nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) in the same session, which is called "septorhinoplasty."

Surgical Approach and Recovery

Performed under general anesthesia, the procedure usually takes between 1 and 1.5 hours. Since all incisions are made inside the nose, there are no visible surgical scars on the face. Today, grooved silicone splints that allow breathing and do not stick to tissues are used instead of traditional tampons, ensuring a much more comfortable recovery process.
